Nathaniel Underwood is one of the most experienced saddle fitters working in the UK today. His skills in the field of saddlery are exceptional in that he is both a horseman and a master craftsman. From an early age Nathaniel has felt an empathy with horses and has dedicated his working life to making and fitting saddles, which minimise the inevitable restrictions that a rider and saddle can cause for a horse.

Nathaniel is a past president of the Society of Master Saddlers and served for over 10 years on their executive committee. He is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers through Redemption of the Trade.

Following the sale of his retail business, Nathaniel is now concentrating on his work as a remedial saddler. He sees many horses through referrals from vets, chartered physiotherapists and chiropractors. Often these are horses with long term or ongoing problems which other saddle fitters have not been able to solve. These horses need owners, health professionals, trainers and a saddler who will work together as a team to maximise their performance and maintain their welfare. Although Nathaniel has worked with some of the most experienced riders in the country to fit top international competition horses, he finds it just as satisfying to improve the comfort of a beloved family friend.

If it is recommended that your horse should been seen by Nathaniel you can be confident that you will not be placed under any pressure to purchase a new saddle. The advice he will give will be honest and professional and always with the best interests of the horse at heart. Each case is treated individually and a thorough assessment is made of all the factors, which may influence the fit of a saddle and the horse’s general well being.

Although there is a lot of information regarding saddle fitting on websites, in magazine articles and books (some of it conflicting), this site does not contain advice on saddle fitting guidelines because some cases are too individual to conform with generalized principles.
Nathaniel Underwood likes to give personal attention to each case and so prefers to be initially in contact with the client via e-mail or phone and if at all possible to see photographs of a horse and build up a picture of its background before giving any advice.
